This census recorded a total of 6 633 wintering Black faced Spoonbills in wetland sites covering from Korean Peninsular and western Japan in the north, coastline of China and down to Philippines and Cambodia in the south . The total figure shows an increase of 7.6 from that of the previous winter (6,162 individuals), setting a new record high of this species. The largest wintering site for Black faced Spoon bills is still Tainan where 2, 279 were counted. Numbers in Republic of Korea , China mainland (including Hainan), Taiwan and the Philippines all increase in this census, while decrease was recorded in Deep Bay (Hong Kong and Shenzhen) Shenzhen), Japan , Macao , Thailand , Malaysia and Vietnam The Black faced Spoonbill could be considered to have better conservation prospect than that in the past with this presented wintering population figure. Nevertheless, situations in some areas, e.g. Deep Bay and Macao, should still draw more attentions and resources to improve the continuous or long term declining numbers from better understanding habitat requirements of this species in these sites |
