Birds of the southernmost island of Korea Dear my bird lovers, As the migratory season has come, it was again proved that Marado Island, the southernmost point of South Korea, is an important area for the migratory birds. Researchers of Jeju Wildlife Research Centre observed more than 70 species of birds in Marado island on April 11 and 12, 2008. It is just surprising that such a small island (o.3 square kilo meter) can provide resting place to so many species of birds. The list includes Oriental Plover which is very difficult to see on mainland Korea. Large marine birds such as Frigatebirds and Boobies were also observed on the island recent years. Ms. Eun-mi Kim, the leader of the researchers said, ¡°The Migratory Birds Research Center in Hongdo Island has found out important facts by researching the migratory birds on the island for the last several years. If such national institute is established in Marado Island some day, it can make a synergy effect in researching the migratory birds in East Asia.¡± The following are some of the birds observed on April 11 and 12, 2008 and attached are some pictures of those birds. I hope you will enjoy the pictures. (P.S. The copyrights of the attached pictures are owned by Mr. Heeman Gang and Mr.Young-ho Kim. Please do not share the pictures with others.)
