Dear all,

I would like to inform you the result of the 2012 International Black-faced Spoonbill Census. After a decline in the previous year, we had a big boost of the total number of Black-faced Spoonbill. The total number is 2,693 individuals, having a significant increase of
854 birds from the previous year. It is a new high figure for this species and it is also the first time to exceed a level of 2,500 individuals. Comparing to the previous highest figure of 2,493 individuals recorded in 2010, this census result still has 14% increase from it.

This big increase is mostly contributed by the increase of birds wintering in Taiwan. A total of 1,562 individuals was recorded in Taiwan, which has an increase of 728 individuals from the total of 834
(87%) recorded in the previous year. Numbers of Black-faced Spoonbills recorded in other places are as follows:

Deep Bay (Hong Kong and Shenzhen): 393 (411 in 2011, decrease 4%) Mainland China (including Hainan): 328 (198 in 2011, increase 66%)
Japan: 283 (270 in 2011, increase 5%)
Macao: 51 (49 in 2011, increase)
South Korea: 41 (26 in 2011, increase)
Vietnam: 35 (49 in 2011, decrease)
Thailand: 2 recorded outside the census period, not included in the total number.
Cambodia: 2 recorded outside the census period, not included in the total number.

Also from the result of this census, the decline of the previous year may not be a real one but perhaps some birds were just not surveyed in the last year's census. Last winter was a very cold one and this winter was in fact very warm. In the result, we can also see that the numbers of birds might be related to the temperature. We had high figures of South Korea, Japan and mainland China but relative lower figure in Deep Bay and Vietnam (and Hainan Island as well). In fact, we have a higher coverage by surveyors in the northern part of the range of the BFS. Many birds might go to further south in the previous year and so we could not locate them.

I would like to thank all the surveyors to participate the census in this year. This census could not be that successful if volunteer surveyors did not offer helps. I also thank all the countries or site coordinator to help coordination of the census in their sites/areas.

As the report for the 2011 census could not be completed before this census, I will make the report to combine both results of 2011 and
2012 in the following months. You will be informed when it is done and ready for downloading.

Best regards,

Yat-tung Yu
