Finally, I heard back today from David James, the well-known Australian expert on frigatebird identification who earlier confirmed Korea's first Great Frigatebird record. Based on the single image, he wrote that he believes the Jeju 2007 bird most probably to be a first calendar year (juvenile) Great Frigatebird. While ruling out Lesser Frigatebird, he cannot 100% rule out an unusually plumaged Christmas Island Frigatebird (a species recorded VERYrarely as far north as Japan, therefore being very much rarer in Japan than either Great or Lesser Frigatebirds which are both recorded annually there I believe). Are there any more images of the same Jeju frigatebird to check the pattern of the belly patch and dark breast band? The lack of axillaries spurs eliminates lesser and most but not all CI. The shape of the belly patch is then the only thing left that is visible. Although not strictly ¡®oval-shaped¡¯ it is rather ¡®curvy¡¯ especially bordering the breast band. CI tens to have straighter lines and better defined angles at the front of the belly patch. Nevertheless, the angle of the photograph is not ideal for judging this. Thus most likely a great, possibly but unlikely a CI frigate (at the conservative end of the scale [i.e. with a great-like belly patch and no spurs]) caught at the wrong angle. 1년생 큰군함조가 거의 확실해 보입니다. 겨드랑이의 흰색 돌출부가 없기 때문에 작은군함조는 절대 아닙니다. 크리스마스섬군함조의 경우에도 겨드랑이 흰색 돌출부가 있는데, 간혹 없는 개체들도 있습니다. 그렇다면 이 사진에서 식별을 위해 고려해야 할 나머지 부분은 배의 띠무늬밖에 없습니다. 정확히 달걀 모양은 아니지만, 곡선형이며, 특히 가슴의 검은색띠와 닿는 부분이 곡선형입니다. 크리스마스섬군함조의 경우 배의 (흰색)띠무늬는 선이 (곡선형이 아니라) 직선에 가깝고 특히 앞쪽은 (곡선형이 아니라) 뚜렷하게 각이 져 있습니다. 하지만 사진 찍은 각도가 식별을 위해 완벽하게 좋지는 않습니다. 그러니까 아마도 큰군함조가 거의 확실하지만, 크리스마스섬 군함조의 가능성을 배제할 수 없습니다. 군함조 식별 포인트 겨드랑이 흰색 돌출 배의 흰색 무늬 작은군함조 100% 있다. 큰군함조 100% 없다. 둥글다 크리스마스섬군함조 90% 있다. 직선으로 각이 졌다. |
